FIDIC and public works contracts: where to start

The form’s name is only the starting point. Compare governing documents, decision routes, notices, changes and close-out.

Identify what governs the project

FIDIC is a family of contract forms with editions and Particular Conditions. A government contract must be read alongside its documents and applicable statutory framework. Familiar FIDIC terminology does not establish that every procedure in a standard form applies.

Compare authority and decision routes

Map who instructs, assesses and approves changes to time or price. Separate a consultant’s recommendation from an authorised approval and identify approvals required before additional work. This distinguishes technical direction from a contractual amendment.

Build a procedure matrix

Use a row for notices, EOT, changes, payments, objections, handover and final account. Record the project-specific provision, deadline, recipient, evidence and approval route. Work from the executed documents rather than remembered clause numbers.

Connect contract, programme and cost

Use one reference for an event or change across the contract register, programme update and cost report. Blue AI — Contract Trace applies this principle to traceable links between events, provisions and evidence, with specialist review of outputs.
